GRULKEFEST
Brent Grulke, SXSW’s creative director for eighteen years, played a defining role in shaping the festival’s identity and growth—from a regional gathering to an international cultural event.
In 1986 Brent’s friend, the tattoo artist Rollo Banks, told him his eyes looked like those of a horse escaping a burning barn—so could he ink that on his right arm? Brent loved the idea as well as the resulting artwork showing a wild-eyed horse peeking through a circle of flames.
When Brent passed away in 2012, the Austin music community came together to honor him with Grulkefest, a memorial concert and benefit held at ACL Live at the Moody Theater.
The event brought together musicians, friends, and collaborators—many of whom had been part of SXSW’s history—to celebrate Brent’s life and raise support for his son’s education.
Grulkefest reflected the same spirit Brent helped cultivate over the years: a deep love of music, a strong sense of community, and an appreciation for the people who make it all happen.
